Guide to Student Accommodations in Adelaide & Melbourne
Not sure which student housing fits you when studying in Adelaide and Melbourne? This guide is for you.

Congratulations, you’ve managed to secure a spot at your preferred university! The next step is to choose your accommodation. While researching the various student accommodations in Adelaide and Melbourne, you’ll most likely come across several housing types:
- Purpose Built Student Accommodations
- University Housing
- Rented Apartments
Each type of student housing has its pros and cons, so here’s a guide to help you choose the most suitable housing type:
Purpose-Built Student Accommodations

Purpose-built student accommodations like Dwell Student Living are specifically designed for students and usually located near educational institutions. They usually offer a mix of studio apartments and shared apartments, giving students to the option to stay alone or with friends. The rooms are fully furnished and come with facilities tailored for students, such as gyms, study areas, social spaces and on-site support. Rent is also all-inclusive, which means the cost of utilities, Wi-Fi, and other services are included.
For example, both Dwell Student Living at Adelaide and Melbourne are close to transport options and university buildings, with entertainment options just minutes away. Students will find it easier to settle in and save on travel costs at the same time.
University Accommodations
Directly owned and offered by Australian universities, university housing is located at a convenient distance from the university campus. Similar to purpose-built student accommodations, university accommodations are fully furnished, but facilities such as bathrooms are communal. Due to its popularity, securing university accommodations is competitive. There are 2 types of university accommodation:
- University Residence: It is like an on-campus shared apartment. Students can choose between a private or shared bedroom, but other facilities, such as bathrooms and kitchens are shared among other students.
- Residential Colleges: These accommodations are similar to purpose built student accommodations. They usually offer furnished rooms, meals and room cleaning services, as well onsite amenities such as gyms and libraries, which will be covered by your rent.
Rented Apartments
You can rent or “lease” a private property either by yourself or with friends. You can do it via a real estate agent or sourcing for it yourself on share house websites and your university. However, international students may find it harder to rent privately, because most landlords require potential tenants to have a comprehensive rental history, as well as having to navigate the necessary paperwork.
If you prefer this housing option, you’ll need to pay a security deposit and advance rent, which is usually 4 weeks each. The security deposit is to cover any damage to the property during your stay.

Ultimately, if you prefer a smooth experience, selecting university housing or purpose-built student accommodation takes a lot of logistical planning out of your hands, and freeing up your time to focus on other matters. However, if you want to have more control over where you stay, perhaps a rental apartment will better meet your needs.
